  There couldn't have been a more remarkable upset. We'd assumed the sophisticated Discovery would romp home as the undisputed best off-roader. Including the cut-price Santana as one of our top ten was something of a joke. Right up until it stormed the mud run and reminded us that with its narrow mud-cutting tyres, simple but effective four-wheel drive system, good ground clearance and strong turbodiesel engine it was going to be a hard act to follow. Armed with no more electronic driving aids than a large digital clock glued into the centre of the dash, the Santana proceeded to outperform its modern rivals. Similarities with the workhorse Defender paid dividends on the approach, departure and break-over angles, serving it admirably on the obstacle course. It cleared the course with rustic ease, confirming our belief that keeping it simple is often the way to achieve the best results when the going gets tough.
